Inspired by the origin story of Childish Gambino’s name, they sought out the Wu-Tang Clan name generator and out popped “Amateur Overlords.” The ring of it stuck, but the etymology of it has come to serve as a guiding purpose for the company.
Amateur - descending from the Latin word ‘amare’ meaning to love and Overlord - a feudal term indicating a ruler of other rulers.
The name, nearly an oxymoron, encompasses the founders’ visions for their careers:
To never lose sight of the love of the craft, but to master it and make room for others like themselves to come forward.
Individuals interested primarily in the representation of people like themselves and the people they wish they saw in media while growing up.
